Mr. Ibu: 6 Things You Didn’t Know About The Late Nollywood Legend

John Ikechukwu Okafor, otherwise known famously as Mr. Ibu who died on the 2nd of march 2024 due to health issues, was a Nigerian actor and comedian who appeared in over 200 Nollywood movies, he is considered to be one of the greatest Nigerian actors of his time. Below are 6 things we feel you didn’t know about this respected actor.

1. He Is From Enugu:

Mr. Ibu was born on the 17th of October 1961 in Nkanu West L.G.A, Enugu State.

2. He Was A Hair Stylist And A Photographer:

Before his acting career Mr. Ibu did menial jobs so he could send himself to school and support his family. He worked as a hairstylist, photographer and also worked in a company that produced crates.

3. He Has A Degree In Mass Communication:

After his primary and secondary school education, Mr. Ibu got admitted into the College of Education, Yola but dropped out due to financial difficulties. He later enrolled in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), where he studied Mass Communication.

4. He Has Acted In More Than 200 Nollywood Movies:

He has acted in more than 200 Nollywood films including Mr. Ibu (2004), Mr. Ibu 2 (2005), Mr. Ibu in London (2005), Ibu in Prison (2006), etc.

5. He Was Also A Musician:

Mr. Ibu also dabbled in music for a short period of time. On 15 October 2020, he released his songs titled “This girl” and “Do you know”.

6. His Illness And Death:

On October 2023, Mr. Ibu revealed that he was suffering from a sickness that threatened to make it necessary to amputate one of his legs. In November 2023, He underwent a leg amputation after suffering from an illness that required seven surgeries. His family said the amputation was done to keep him alive and increase his chances of recovery.

Mr. Ibu died at Evercare Hospital in Lagos on the 2nd of March 2024, at the age of 62, as a result of cardiac arrest.
